Blue
Apple Players: A History of Success
Founded
in 1976, Blue Apple Players is a nationally acclaimed nonprofit,
theater company producing original musicals and educational
theater programs for young audiences. Entertaining and inspiring,
programs reach across social, economic, and geographical boundaries
and use the power of drama to ignite children’s imagination
and change lives.
Blue Apple
tours over 150 performances of its award-winning original
musicals each year, reaching nearly 100,000 youth
throughout a ten state region. Venues have ranged from the
Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to inner city Chicago schools
and log gymnasiums in the mountains of Kentucky. Drama
for Learning; Drama for Life provides drama-based
education programs focused on academic and social growth for
youth at more than 70 different schools and community sites
a year in the Metro Louisville area and Southern Indiana.
An inventory
of 36 original musicals, written by Artistic Director
Geraldine Ann Snyder, addresses topics ranging from teen pregnancy
and adolescent suicide to musicals based on American history
and traditional folk tales. Blue Apple provides educators
with professional lesson plans that link
core content requirements to each performance. With publication
of scripts by Samuel French Inc. and The Dramatic
Publishing Co., - the top theatrical publishers - Blue Apple
musicals reach communities from Canada to Hawaii through performances
by other companies.
Video
adaptations of its original musicals: NO MORE SECRETS
(child abuse), CONSEQUENCES (teen pregnancy), and STOP THE
VIOLENCE (youth violence) have been televised and are used
in classrooms in every state.
Blue
Apple has been at the forefront of evaluation with published
studies in national education journals and studies
by the University of Kentucky documenting the effectiveness
of Blue Apple’s work in making a positive impact on
children’s attitudes, behavior, and academic achievement.
Blue Apple
is one of only 21 arts groups nationwide recognized by the
Wallace Foundation for a prestigious and highly competitive
award for Leadership and Excellence in Arts Participation.
